The new Miss Soweto 2009 is 19-year-old student Keneilwe Maduko. She won the title Saturday night, beating 19 other finalists. First runner-up was Refiloe Motsei, 23. Second runner-up was Lerato Mokoena, 20. The Miss Soweto pageant celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. Two former Miss Soweto titleholders that Beauty School scholars might recognize are Augustine Masilela, first runner-up to Miss South Africa 1992 and Miss Universe South Africa 1995; and Basetsane Makgalamele, Miss South Africa 1994 and first runner-up to Miss World 1994.
