Detroit Free Press, 18-aug-2010: As controversy swirls over body-painted topless images of this year's Miss Universe contestants, Miss USA Rima Fakih said says she's focused on fasting from sunrise to sunset in accordance with Islamic tradition during the holy month of Ramadan.
Fakih of Dearborn is the first Arab-American and Muslim to be crowned Miss USA. She spoke Tuesday to the Free Press from Las Vegas, where she and beauties from around the world are prepping to compete in Monday's Miss Universe contest. Ramadan started last week and continues through Sept. 10. During the month, observant Muslims don't eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. "I am fasting," Fakih said. "It's part of my religion. I wanted to be respectful." She said the racy photo shoot last week involving body paint was "pure art." A photo shows her from the back with her arm covering her chest.
